Navy Regs
Bicycle helmets required
Bicycle helmets must be worn by all DoD people whether they're riding their bikes for
recreation or work. A message from the Naval Safety Center states that the new DoD bicycle
safety policy applies to everyone riding a bicycle on a naval installation. According to Wil
Calvey, NPS Police Operations Officer, "this policy applies not only to the campus, but the La
Mesa Village, too. It's Navy property."
Workers who are mandated to use a government issued bicycle shall be issued an approved
helmet at the expense of the command. Plus, workers who ride bicycles in areas which require
the use of ANSI approved helmets (hard hats) are allowed to use those helmets instead of
approved bicycle helmets. Helmet chinstraps should be securely fastened.
Kids, don't try that last paragraph at home! Use of hard hats in place of bicycle helmets is not recommended. Hard hats are great if a brick falls on your head while you are riding, but in a crash to pavement they don't offer a whole lot of protection against impact.
